Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Linguistics
Overview
The PhD in Applied Linguistics is a research-driven program designed for the next generation of language scholars and industry innovators. This program allows candidates to specialize in either Applied Linguistics or Translation Studies, with a core emphasis on integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced computational tools into language research.
The Program equips researchers with the high-level analytical, technological, and methodological skills needed for today’s global, tech-driven language market. It prepares graduates for leadership roles across both academia and the rapidly evolving AI and language technology industries.
Objectives
The Program aims to:
- Advance theoretical and practical knowledge in Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies, with a strong emphasis on AI-driven language technologies and computational paradigms.
- Train high-caliber researchers capable of building interdisciplinary perspectives to address complex, real-world language and communication challenges in the rapidly evolving landscape of digital and AI-driven language studies.

Admission Requirements:
- Master’s Degree: A Master’s degree in English Language or Translation from an accredited Egyptian university (or an equivalent degree certified by the Supreme Council of Universities) with a minimum grade of “Good” or a GPA of 2.7+.
- English Proficiency: A minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL ITP (via AMIDEAST) or a 6.0 on the IELTS Academic. Note: Scores must be submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office before tuition payment.
- Interview Evaluation: Successful completion of a personal interview.
Application Process
- Apply Online: Complete all required fields on the MIU online application portal and select your preferred test date.
- Bring Hard Copies: Bring all original required documents on the day of your admission test.
- Academic Advising & Payment: Once accepted into the program, schedule a meeting with your academic advisor to choose your courses and settle your tuition fees.
Program Structure
The students are required to successfully complete (60 credit hours) distributed as follows:
I- 24 Credit Hours of Course Work

II- Thesis 36 credit hours
Degree Timeline
Program Duration: The standard duration of the program is three years, consisting of two semesters of coursework followed by two calendar years dedicated to thesis writing.
Maximum Timeframe: Students must complete both the coursework and thesis requirements within a maximum period of five years.
Credit Load: The maximum enrollment limit is 12 credit hours per semester.
Class Schedule: Lectures are held during the afternoon on weekdays, including Saturdays.
Language of Instruction
English is the language of instruction. The thesis must be submitted in English.
