Mass Communication Students Visit VeryNile to Raise Environmental Awareness

The Community Service Committee of the Faculty of Al-Alsun and Mass Communication committee organized a visit to the Very Nile Initiative for Mass Communication students onTuesday, November 14, 2023. The purpose of the visit was to raise students’ awareness about the importance of ensuring access to clean water, aligning with the sixth sustainable development goal of the United Nations and Egypt’s 2030 vision for clean water, equitable sanitation, and hygiene for all.

The Very Nile Initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing plastic consumption and develop eco-friendly solutions to remove inorganic waste from the river, in collaboration with the fishermen on Qursaya Island in Cairo.

The visit started with an orientation given by Mr. Ahmed Hatem, the logistics manager, who offered students a tour of VeryNile units. He emphasized VeryNile’s commitment to developing sustainable methods for cleaning the Nile, including recycling plastic bottle caps into multi-use plastic sheets and transforming or “upcycling” these plastic bags into attractive products such as bags, wallets, and caps.  He also highlighted that VeryNile empowers local marginalized communities of fishermen through an environmental process of collecting recyclables of trash from the Nile in exchange for financial incentives.

After the orientation, the students attended two workshops. They first attended an environmental session conducted by Ms. Amna Karamallah, the Awareness and Advocacy Intern. She provided the students with valuable information about the Nile River, its sources, beach cleanups, plastic pollution, and various awareness-raising activities. In the second workshop, the students had a hands-on upcycling experience where they made their own wallets out of plastic waste and took them home.

The Mass Communication department within the Faculty of Al-Alsun and Mass Communication sent a total of 150 students to various media institutions for internship and training programs throughout the 2022/2023 academic year, as part of its Student Internship Program (SIP).

SIP has forged partnerships with advertising agencies and media training centers in the fields of voice-over, dubbing, e-marketing, and social media management.  These internships provided students with invaluable exposure to the media industry, enabling them to confront real-world career challenges.

Completion of a minimum of 30 hours of training or internships within a media institution is a prerequisite for Mass Communication students to obtain their bachelor’s degree. This requirement ensures that students develop a robust professional foundation to complement the theoretical and practical knowledge gained on the MIU campus.

The recent internships build upon SIP’s continued commitment to providing essential skill development for students. In August 2021 a batch of 32 students completed their mass media skills training at The Middle East News Agency. Subsequently, in September 2021, the second and third batches, consisting of 50 students each, joined the voice-over training and e-marketing training at Maspero,

In pursuit of their goal to equip students with essential skills, SIP remains committed to enrolling its students in pivotal training programs and internships. These opportunities allow students to immerse themselves in the media industry, connect with seasoned professionals, and establish a competitive edge in the ever-evolving media landscape.

Looking ahead, the department is already planning its seventh batch of internships at Pronto FM, offering students a chance to gain expertise in Dubbing and Advanced Digital Marketing skills.
