Bridging Knowledge to Lifesaving: Advanced BLS Course for Pharmacy Graduates

The Continuing Education Committee, Faculty of Pharmacy, has recently provided an exceptional educational opportunity to 13 of its outstanding graduates: the Basic Life Support (BLS) course. 

This course was organized in partnership with the American Heart Association and Alameda’s Dar El Fouad Training Academy.

Designed with the utmost precision, the BLS training stands as a pinnacle of professional development for both Pharm D and Pharm D-Clinical Pharmacy graduates.

The course combined theoretical understanding with intense hands-on training to provide participants with vital life-saving abilities.

Key components of this training encompassed the mastery of critical concepts related to effective resuscitation, the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED), CPR for adults, children, and infants, rescue breathing for all ages, bag-mask techniques for all ages, and management of choking patients of all ages.

Following practical and theoretical evaluations, AHA certificates were awarded at the end of the course.

Misr International University always seeks out suitable ways to get its students updated with all the new aspects of all fields. Thus, MIU’s Faculty of Pharmacy was delighted to have Dr Ebtesam Ahmad, Pharm.D, M.S, Clinical Associate Professor, St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care, as a visiting professor from April 3rd to the 14th , 2016 .
During her visit, Dr. Ebtesam taught senior students about various oncologic diseases, with special emphasis on the role of the clinical pharmacist in providing supportive care in oncology. Dr. Ebtesam also presented a session in the 10th Continuing Education workshop of the Faculty of Pharmacy, that was held on the 9th of April titled; “Integrating Targets in Oncology; A Perspective on Palliative, Supportive Care and Beyond”.
A second workshop was held in the Drug Information Center with the title: “Optimizing cancer pain management: stepping up to the challenge” and was directed to the oncology clinical pharmacists at the National Cancer Institute, Nasser Institute and faculty members from the Faculty of Pharmacy, from Cairo and Ain Shams Universities.

 The Faculty of Pharmacy at Misr International University is honored to have Dr Sharon See, Pharm.D, M.S, Clinical Professor, St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, as a visiting professor from September18th –29th, 2016 . During this period she will be teaching to senior students in the Pharmacotherapy I course various infectious diseases, with special emphasis on the new updates in the antibiotic treatment and the role of clinical pharmacists in providing Antibiotic Stewardship.  Dr See will also present a session in the 11th Continuing Education Workshop of the Faculty of Pharmacy,  that will be held on September 27 th, 2016.

Prof. Dr. Rowena Schwartz’s Visit to MIU

Prof. Dr. Rowena Schwartz, PharmD, BCOP, visited the Faculty of Pharmacy, MIU, from February 18th till March 2nd, 2017.

During her stay, Dr. Schwartz taught 5th year pharmacy students the common oncologic diseases and their pharmacotherapeutic approaches. She also discussed the role of Clinical Pharmacy in the oncology domain and necessary chemotherapy patient follow up and counseling concepts that will lead to the advancement of health outcomes in Egypt.

Dr. Rowena also presented  two sessions in the 12th Continuing Education Workshop of the Faculty of Pharmacy  that was  held on Wednesday, March 1st, 2017 titled “New Frontiers in Cancer Care: Evolving therapies, optimizing therapies during care, and survivorship measures”. Her first topic was on “Optimizing Endocrine Therapy in Cancer: Enhancing Efficacy and Minimizing Toxicities”, while the second was on “Providing the Foundations for Patients and Caregivers in Cancer Care: Patient Counseling”.

Misr International University’s Faculty of Pharmacy was delighted to host Dr. Ebtesam Ahmad, PharmD, M.S, Clinical Associate Professor at St. John’s University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care, as a visiting professor from February 24th till March 12th, 2017.

During her visit, Dr. Ebtesam taught senior students various clinical topics related to geriatric diseases, medication therapy management (MTM) and pain management, with special emphasis on the role of the clinical pharmacist in providing palliative care.

Dr. Ebtesam also presented a session in the 12th Continuing Education Workshop of the Faculty of Pharmacy that was held on Wednesday, March 1st, 2017 titled “New Frontiers in Cancer Care: Evolving therapies, optimizing therapies during care, and survivorship measures.” Her topic was on Palliative Care Needs of Cancer Survivors.

Continuing Education Workshop

Misr International University is always contributing to developing its students’ futures and careers and keen to develop the quality of education in Egypt. MIU decided to hold a workshop for the Continuing Education entitled “Integrating Targets in Oncology, A perspective on Palliative, and Supportive Care and Beyond” on Saturday 9th of April, 2016.

Four professors participated in the workshop: Prof. Samy Alsirafy, Professor of Clinical Oncology at Kasr Al-Ainy, Prof. Ebtesam Ahmad, Pharm.D, M.S., St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health, U.S.A, Prof. Abdallah Abo-Taleb, BScPhm, PhD, and Prof. Heba Anise, BScPhm, BCNSP.

A hundred hospital and clinical pharmacists from diverse health institutions in Egypt as well as academics from governmental faculties of pharmacy attended the CE Workshop that was held as a part of the ACPE accredited series of the Continuing Professional Pharmacy Development Program at the MIU Faculty of Pharmacy.

 

MIU’s 12th Continuing Education Seminar

Misr International University’s Faculty of Pharmacy held its 12th Continuing Education Seminar entitled “New Frontiers in Cancer Care: Evolving therapies, optimizing therapies during care, and survivorship measures” on Wednesday, March 1st, 2017. The workshop was conducted by renowned professors and around 120 hospital and clinical pharmacists from diverse health institutions in Egypt, as well as academic colleagues from governmental universities. The Continuing Education workshop was held as part of ACPE accredited series of Continuing Professional Pharmacy Development Program at MIU, Faculty of Pharmacy.

The workshop included four important sessions for the development of pharmacy practice in Egypt. The first session was held by Dr. Rowena Schwartz, Pharm.D, BCOP, Associate Professor of Pharmacy, James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy, University of Cincinnati, USA, who discussed Optimizing Endocrine Therapy in Cancer: Enhancing Efficacy and Minimizing Toxicities.

The second session was held by Dr. Emad Shash, MBBCh, MSc, MD, Assistant Professor and Deputy Medical Director at National Cancer Institute, Cairo University and he discussed the Immunotherapy Shaping the Future of Cancer Management Landscape: Opportunities & Challenges.

While the third session was conducted by Dr. Schwartz who tackled the Foundations for Patients and Caregivers in Cancer Care: Patient Counseling.

At last, Dr. Ebtesam Ahmed, Pharm.D, M.S. Clinical Associate Professor St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, New York – USA, conducted the fourth session, in which she discussed the Palliative Care Needs of Cancer Survivors.

MIU is honored to invite Professor Ebtesam Ahmed, Pharm.D, M.S, Clinical Associate Professor, St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, MJHS Institute for Innovation in Palliative Care to give lectures to students of Faculty of Pharmacy.

Professor Ebtesam’s visit is from the 3rd to the 14th of April, 2016.  During this visit she will be teaching senior students various oncologic diseases, with special emphasis on the role of the clinical pharmacist in providing supportive care in oncology.

Dr Ebtesam will also present a session in the 10th  Continuing Education workshop for the Faculty of Pharmacy,  that will be held on the 9th of April titled; “Integrating Targets in Oncology; A Perspective on Palliative, Supportive Care and Beyond.” The second workshop will be held in the Drug Information Center, at MIU, and will be directed to the oncology clinical pharmacists at the National Cancer Institute and Baheya Breast Cancer Hospital with the title:” Optimizing cancer pain management: stepping up to the challenge.”

Continuing Education Workshop on Strokes, Heart attacks and the Role of clinical pharmacists in critical care settings

The Faculty of Pharmacy was visited twice by Dr Hira Shafeeq, Assistant Professor at the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, St. John’s University during Spring 2019 semester. The first visit was from February 25th to March 4th, and the second from April 6th to April 19th,During this time, she gave a lecture to students of the Ministry of Health Egyptian Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacy, as part of the continuing education programme. The lecture covered various topics, including strokes, heart attacks and the role of clinical pharmacists in critical care settings.

Around 75 pharmacists attended the lecture and gave a positive feedback about its importance and the valuable contribution it made to their knowledge about the application of clinical pharmacy in the field of cardiovascular disease.
