Logical Manuscript Structure

Researches off the Ground

In cooperation with Egyptian Knowledge Bank, a workshop was held on Monday 24th of September 2018 entitled “Logical Manuscript Structure” introduced by Dr. Lea Gagnon, Editorial Development Advisor, Ph.D. from the University of Montreal.

The workshop focused on manuscript structure that help researches from all fields to improve the quality of their manuscripts.

Strategies were given o how to efficiently draft a manuscript and collaborate with international coauthors. Faculty members as well as teaching assistants from all faculties attended the workshop.
The instructor was rated excellent by (72.2%) of the participants, very good by (22.2%), and good by (5.06%).

Writing a Grant Proposal

Researches off the Ground

In cooperation with the Egyptian Knowledge Bank, the University Community Services and Environmental Affairs Committee, a workshop  entitled “How to Write a Grant Proposal” was  conducted on Monday the 26th of November 2018. The workshop  was introduced by Prof. Ahmed A.Farghali, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research, Faculty of postgraduate studies for advanced science (PSAS), Beni-Suef University (BSU). Prof Farghali is the Executive Manager of the Scientific Research Development Unit (SRDU), Beni-Suef University. The purpose of the workshop was to explain how to write a grant proposal and the criteria needed to get funded.  The workshop explained the elements of a grant proposal including cover letter, title page, summary, introduction, problem or needs assessment, objectives, methods, evaluation plan, sustainability and, finally, the budget criteria.

Faculty members as well as teaching assistants from all faculties attended the workshop. The instructor was rated excellent by 69% of the participants, very good by 23% and good by only 7%).

 

“Quality in Research” workshop

On Wednesday the 18th of July, 2018, the University Community Service and Environmental Affairs Committee conducted a workshop in collaboration with the Egyptian Knowledge Bank  (EKB) and Clarivate Analytics.

The workshop entitled “Quality in Research” was introduced by Consultancy Services and Client Education (MENA team). The topics covered by the workshop were how to define your research subject area, what to read and what to cite, research methodology, what, where and why to publish, and when not to publish, and lastly when one should think of filing a patent.

A total of 25 Staff members and teaching assistants from all university faculties attended the workshop.

The instructors were rated excellent by60% of the participants, very good by 30%, and good by 10%.

The First SciVal Champions Program Workshop

In cooperation with Egyptian Knowledge Bank, the University Community Service Committee organized a workshop on Sunday the 3th of April 2019 entitled “SciVal Champions Program Workshop”.
The workshop was introduced by Dr. Yehia Eissa, Customer Consultant, Research Intelligence ELSEVIER – Research Solutions Sales. This workshop is the first of a series of workshops allowing the champions to start familiarizing with Scival to extract data that would be of value to the institute when making evidence-based decisions. The workshop focused on research performance metrics, advanced training on SciVal, sharing global experience using analytics and assignments to produce reports on real cases relevant to MIU. All ten members chosen to participate in the program attended the workshop.
The instructor was rated excellent by 55.5% of the participants and very good by 44.5%.

Institutional Review Board (IRB) Research Protocol

The IRB Committee at the Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine in collaboration with The Staff Development Committee organized a workshop to address the functions, roles and responsibilities of the IRB as an essential part of valid scientific research. The workshop was conducted on 17th July, 2017 by Dr. Isabelle Nakhla– Senior Research Scientist at The U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) and consultant of the committee. Staff members from all departments attended the workshop.

The aim was to highlight the purposes and functions of the IRB committee as well as to spread the knowledge regarding protecting the rights and safety of all research topics and maintain institutional compliance with regulations. All participants were satisfied with the workshop; 93.3% rated it as excellent and very good and only 6.7% rated it as good Most of the comments recommended providing handouts and conducting similar workshops regularly.

How to Write a Research Protocol for Dental Post-Grad Students

The IRB Committee at the Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine organized a workshop for the faculty post-graduate students on how to write a research protocol according to the IRB guidelines.
The workshop was conducted on 17th July, 2017 by Dr. Isabelle Nakhla – Senior Research Scientist at The U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) and consultant of the committee. The purpose was to highlight the functions and responsibilities of IRB committee and to educate the students on how to write a well-designed research protocol in compliance with the IRB guidelines.
All participants were satisfied with the workshop; 66.7% rated it as excellent and very good and 33.3% rated it as good. The participants’ recommended providing handouts and written protocols as reference.

Standards for Initiating a Systematic Review

The University Community Services and Environmental Affairs Committee organized a workshop entitled “SYNTHESIS OF EVIDENCE” on Sunday the 2nd of December, 2018. The workshop was given by Prof. Ashraf F Nabhan, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ain Shams University, Vice Chairman, Regional Research Committee for Africa and Eastern Mediterranean, HRP Alliance, WHO Associate Editor, Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth. The purpose of the workshop was to explain the standards for initiating a systematic review and discuss the way to develop a systematic review protocol.
The workshop was attended by the staff members of both the Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine and Faculty of Pharmacy as well as by dentistry postgraduate students .
The instructor was rated excellent by (57.1%) of the participants, very good by (23.8%), and good by only (14.3%).

Better Research Tools – Better Results

In collaboration with University Community Service Committee, Egyptian Knowledge Bank (EKB) and Clarivate Analytics, a workshop entitled “Research Assessment for Universities Rankings Pusposes” was held on the 7th of December 2018.
The workshop was conducted by Consultancy Services and Client Education (MENA team) represented by Ph.D. Walid Hassan, Ph.D. Ayman Akil, and Amine Triki. It focused on finding and accessing scientific research, identifying key opinion leaders, authoring research and collaboration, as well as professional services. Faculty members and teaching assistants from all faculties attended the workshop.
The instructor was rated excellent by 22.2% of the participants and very good by 77.8%.

الملتقى التعليمي الأول للجامعة

قامت الجامعة بتنظيم الملتقى التعليمي الأول على مدار يومين (22 و 23 ابريل 2019). شهد الملتقى حضور مكثف من أعضاء هيئة التدريس و الهيئة المعاونة من جميع الكليات. شملت ندوات اليوم الأول استعراض لطرق تطوير البرامج الأكاديمية و المقررات الدراسية للتتوائم مع المتطلبات العالمية و احتياجات سوق العمل. خلال اليوم الثاني عقدت ندوات نوعية حيث عقدت ندوات للقطاع الطبى و العلوم الانسانية و أخرى للعلوم الهندسية و الحاسبات. استعرضت هذه الندوات طرق التعلم و التعليم و التقييم الحديثة و خاصة التعلم باستخدام وسائل التكنولوجيا المختلفة مثل تطبيقات الهواتف الذكية و التعلم باستخدام وسائل التواصل الاجتماعى.

Quality, Innovation and International University Rankings

On Sunday 10th December 2017, Professor Kevin Kinser – Department Head, Education Policy Studies, Pennsylvania State University conducted a workshop entitled “Quality, Innovation and International Rankings: Defining World Class Universities in Egypt”. The workshop was held in collaboration with the American Embassy in Cairo under the umbrella of Community Service Sector at MIU. The aim of the workshop was to elaborate on the new realities of higher education, world class universities, internationalization, Quality Assurance in higher education, innovations in higher education and international university ranking. Deans, vice deans and staff members representing all faculties participated in the workshop. Two attendees evaluated the course as excellent, 8 attendees evaluated it as very good while two evaluated it as good.  Only two attendees rated it as fair and the recommendation was to focus on the methods that should be applied by MIU so as to appear on the international ranking list.
