Faculty of Al-Alsun and Mass Communication Raises Awareness of Climate Change
15 Mar 2023To address the sustainable development goal of limiting and adapting to climate change, the Faculty of Al-Alsun and Mass Communication held a seminar titled, “Climate Change: Causes, Consequences & Possible Solutions” on Wednesday, March 8, 2023. Dr. Enas Elshatoury, Professor of environmental microbiology in the Faculty of Science at Ain Shams University, presented an overview of the climate change that is affecting all countries worldwide.
Professor Elshatoury highlighted both natural and human causes of climate change. The natural causes include volcanic eruptions, ocean currents, plate tectonics, and solar-terrestrial effects. On the other hand, human activities comprise industrialization, transportation, landfills, and deforestation. She also demonstrated the estimated climate change impact on the world economy, water supplies, population displacement and poverty levels over the coming thirty years.
Professor Elshatoury also referred to the recommendations of the COP 27 conference held in Sharm El-Sheikh in November 2022, which focused on the importance of acting through Egyptian governmental sustainability initiatives to incorporate climate change measures into national strategies and planning. She concluded by providing tips that individuals can follow to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through carpooling, the use of public transportation, planting trees and switching to clean energy.
