GMU Seminar
19 Apr 2022Dr Samar Mowafy, assistant professor at the Pharmaceutical Chemistry department gave a talk on Tuesday, April 12th at the Master of Science in Drug Discovery and Development seminar series at Gulf Medical University (GMU). The seminar was attended by all faculty members and the students enrolled in the Master’s program, along with the department of pharmaceutical sciences members.
In the seminar titled “Chimeric kinase HDAC inhibitors: a challenging approach to combat cancer”, Dr Mowafy discussed the development of several dual kinase and HDAC inhibitors as one of the approaches to the treatment of various cancer types where both kinases and HDACs are overexpressed. Dr. Samar explained the usefulness of using such chimeric inhibitors and the latest developments in this field. In addition, she explained the synthesis and biological investigations performed for the newly developed compounds at different molecular and cellular levels to test their ability to inhibit specific types of kinase enzymes and HDACs as well.
At the end of the seminar, Dr Samar answered questions about the different possible future directions for the work. Mutual research interest was found among some of the department members, which could lead to further collaborative research work on both sides.
