3 Feb 2020
Al-Alsun students attending the Topics in Linguistics Course – Fall 2019 visited the Right to Live Association in Heliopolis to observe literacy and speech therapy activities for persons with special needs. The field trips aimed to address the students’ lack of knowledge of the characteristics and the needs of the persons with special needs.
In the class, the students were first introduced to the developmental process of first language acquisition, the role of the brain and memory in this process and the causes and features of types of language impairments.
In the visits the students recorded their observations, conducted interviews with officials at the association, and attended orientation sessions on the physiological, psychological and educational profiles of different types of disabilities by in-house experts.
The visits succeeded in creating awareness of the nature and the needs of the people with special needs, increasing the students’ interest in serving this population as well as encouraging the MIU Al-Alsun students to consider education for special needs as a promising job market.
