Course Overview
This 6-month course (once/week) consists of 5 main objectives explaining the nature and management of the periodontal diseases, the role of soft tissue grafting as well as facts concerning its limitations. Throughout the course, candidates will also learn periodontal solution for restorative problems.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- gain knowledge of innovations in basic sciences related to Periodontal therapy.
- understand the evidence based rationale for periodontal therapy.
- develop and maintain surgical skills for soft tissue management.
- deal with complicated interdisciplinary cases.
- gain knowledge about the etiology and mechanism of gingival recession and methods to correct them.
- learn how to diagnose periodontal diseases.
- develop treatment guidelines based on proper diagnosis and treatment planning.
- learn more about aesthetic and how to deal with patients’ demands.
- understand the “team work” concept when dealing with difficult cases.
- improve the ability of the clinician to take the proper decision: “WHEN TO RESTORE AND WHEN TO EXTRACT”.

- Basic terminology in periodontics
- Healthy vs diseased periodontium
- Macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the gingiva
- Role of bacterial bio film in the development of periodontal diseases
- Association between different systemic conditions and periodontitis
- Protocol of management of periodontal disease according to evidence based science
- “Soft Tissue grafting, Facts & Limitations”
- The role of soft tissue in the maintenance of periodontal health
- Etiology and mechanism of gingival recession
- The primary goal of soft tissue grafting
- Healing and long term outcome of soft tissue grafting
- Effect of orthodontic movements on soft tissue behaviour
- Evidence based rationale for soft tissue grafting
- Healing and long term outcome of soft tissue grafting
- The use of soft tissue grafting in edentulous area to avoid and treat alveolar ridge collapse
- “Periodontal Solution for Restorative Problems”
- Different esthetic problems affecting the periodontium
- Smile analysis and design
- The components of a perfect smile
- The proper diagnosis and timing for treatment
- The esthetic crown lengthening procedure
- The team work effort when dealing with esthetic cases
- Soft tissue management in different esthetic cases
- “WHEN TO RESTORE AND WHEN TO EXTRACT”
- This lecture is an interactive lecture for all dental interns. Many clinical situations will be presented and a detailed discussion will be held with the students to achieve a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
